Biography of Ermanno Brignolo
Italian Australian guitarist and composer, Ermanno Brignolo started playing the guitar in his childhood years. Graduated cum laude in 2003 at the Conservatorium of Novara, he continued studying with Angelo Gilardino and Christian Saggese, while also attending several masterclasses with some of the most renowned figures of the international guitar landscape.

During his career, Ermanno Brignolo has performed regularly in Europe, Asia and Australia, playing works carefully chosen among the milestones of the guitar literature as well as lesser known pieces of the original repertoire, with particular focus on music from the twentieth and twenty-first century. Among others, Ermanno has played for prestigious establishments such as Associazione Musicare, Accademia internazionale della Chitarra di Brescia, Claxica International guitar festival and competition, Festival internazionale della chitarra di Lagonegro, Sydney Classical Guitar Society, Classical Guitar society of Victoria, Canberra Classical Guitar Society, Istituto Italiano di Cultura.

Critics, composers and fellow musicians have le enthusiastic opinions on Ermanno Brignoloʼs musicianship, his original approach to the repertoire and his clear rendition of the musical text. Worthy of mention are the words of Tim Kain («one of the clearest renditions of polyphony I have heard»), and Luigi Biscaldi («limitless»).
The most important titles in his discography are:

  • The Andrés Segovia Archive, 7CD-box distributed by Brilliant Classics. It features the world premiere complete recording of the homonimous collection of music edited by Angelo Gilardino and published by Edizioni Musicali Bèrben

  • Platero y yo, with the actress and singer Minie Minarelli. Distributed by dotGuitar, this record includes the complete recording of Platero y yo, by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, featuring both English and Italian text.

  • Cahier des chansons anciennes n. 2, ditributed by dotGuitar. World premiere recording of the 12 pieces cycle written by the Italian composer Alfredo Franco who dedicated it to Ermanno Brignolo.

“The Andrés Segovia Archive” has been defined by critics and renowned musicians as «a milestone of the guitar discography» (Cristiano Porqueddu) and «one of the best records of the last thirty years» (Gitarre und laute)

An important part of the musical activity Ermanno Brignolo carries on is teching. Ermanno has taught seminars, workshops concert lessons and masterclasses for a variety of institutions such as Conservatorio “Vivaldi” in Alessandria, Conservatorio “Cantelli” in Novara, Accademia di Alto Perfezionamento Astigiana (Asti, Italy), Casimir Catholic College (Sydney, Australia); Associazione musicale Roma Castelli, Sydney Classical Guitar Society, Dante Alighieri Society of Sydney, Accademia internazionale della chitarra di Brescia.

Since 2019 he has been appointed as guest professor at the advanced master degree at the conservatorium of Novara.
Ermanno Brignolo has been musical critic for the Italian magazine ʻSeicordeʼ until it existed. Ermanno also holds a flying colours Bachelorʼs degree in Mechanical Engineering from Politecnico di Torino.
