Dorine Tolley, Johanna Petsche and Donna Cain

Dorine Tolley studied piano and harpsichord with Marijke Smit Sibinga in the Netherlands. She played in various chamber ensembles and performed with the Dutch Youth Orchestra in the late 1960’s. While completing her master’s degree in English she did an early music course with David Munrow at Leicester University in 1972 and performed for Radio Leicester. She followed a course in music therapy with Dr. Annette Cramer using a German designed monochord and practiced as a music therapist in the Netherlands. In 2001 she came to live in Australia and played with Orchestra 143. In 2005 she accompanied Russian soprano Tatiana Samoylova at the Centre of Performing Arts in Mumbai and at the Pune Music Society. She has also been interested in the piano music of Gurdjieff/de Hartmann and today teaches and accompanies Gurdjieff movements in Sydney. Together with her husband, Dorine organises yearly house concerts at her home in Sydney to promote young musicians.

Johanna Petsche received her AMus in clarinet in 2003 and completed her Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Arts at the University of Sydney in 2008, majoring in performance on clarinet, as well as philosophy and studies in religion. She is currently completing her Ph.D. at the University of Sydney on the piano music of Armenian-Greek mystic, G. I. Gurdjieff, and tutoring classes in studies in religion. She enjoys playing classical, romantic, and contemporary music, particularly music by Schubert, Weber, Poulenc, and Lutoslawski. The trio of Johanna Petsche, soprano Donna Cain and pianist/harpsichordist Dorine Tolley is a new venture. This recital for Glebe Music Festival is their second public performance, and they recently recorded their first CD.

Donna sings for community festivals, recitals, weddings, events, and for church and memorial services. In 2012, Donna performed at her third Back to Balmain Day, a community event held by St Andrews Church, Balmain. Donna has also been busking regularly in the City of Sydney area, at The Rocks Market and Martin Place. Past opera roles include playing Musetta in La Bohème in Mudgee, in aid of the Vision Australia charity, and at The Prince of Wales Opera House, Gulgong, with the Very Small Opera. Donna also performed the role of Queen of the Night in North Sydney Opera's March 2006 production of Mozart's The Magic Flute. In Musical Theatre, Donna has performed principal roles including Marsinah in Kismet and Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance. Donna has sung in many festivals, as a soloist at Concord Carnival (2011 and 2010), as a support act to Mark Vincent in Ku-ring-gai Council’s Twilight Concert in the Park (2010), Armidale Spring Festival (2009), and at Campbelltown Cultural Festival. Having sung extensively in opera and choral concerts in The Netherlands, the UK and Australia, Donna is working towards a Bachelor of Music degree with the University of New England in Armidale. This is Donna’s third recital for Glebe Music Festival.
